A member is a customer who has joined a shop's loyalty club. Joining is a choice the customer makes: they give a way to be recognised, usually a mobile number, and accept the deal on offer. From then on their stamps are counted, their rewards are recorded, and the shop may contact them in the ways they agreed to and no others.

A member is not the same thing as a regular. Some of a shop's most loyal customers never join anything, and some members join on their first visit and are never seen again. The useful question is how far the two groups overlap: the more regulars who are members, the more of the shop's steady trade the card actually reaches.

In practice

A greengrocer rings up about 1,000 sales a week and has 280 members after two months. To see how much of the trade they cover, staff keep a tally for one busy Saturday morning, marking each sale as member or not. Of 160 sales between 8 and 11, 66 were to members, or 41 percent. On a weekday afternoon the figure is 28 percent, because more passing trade comes through.

That gap tells the owner where to ask. The Saturday regulars are mostly in; the weekday crowd is not, and a few weeks of asking in the afternoons will close it. The same tally repeated each quarter shows whether the club is reaching more of the shop's trade or has stalled.

Members also have rights the shop must respect. A member can stop messages at any time, can ask to be removed, and should never hear from the shop about anything they did not agree to.

In Counter Club

Customers join only themselves, by scanning the QR or opening your link, typing an Australian mobile and confirming a texted code. First name and email are optional. Nobody can be added by the shop, and the Members page lists everyone newest first with their stamps. See members.

Setting the card takes two minutes. The first fifty members are free, paid for by a marketing consent instead of a card, and the card runs in full from day one.
