For pharmacies

A card for the front of the shop, where the locals browse

An independent pharmacy sees its locals more often than almost any shop on the strip, and competes with discount chains that run points schemes. Counter Club gives you something simpler: a stamp card for the front of the shop, covering skincare, sunscreen, vitamins and gifts. Keep prescriptions out of it, keep the messages to news, and let the card do the thanking.

What gets in the way for pharmacies

The chain down the road has points

A stamp card will not out-point a national scheme, and it does not need to. A clear reward after a few visits is easy to understand, and it comes with a pharmacist who knows the customer's name.

Prescriptions are not a promotion

Dispensed medicines are no place for a reward, and the rules on promoting medicines and pharmacy services are yours to check. Stamp front-of-shop purchases over a set spend, and say so on the sign.

Seasonal stock needs a nudge

Sunscreen in spring, gift packs in December, a new skincare range any time. A message to the club about what has arrived, with no health claims, is news people actually use.

A worked example

Pharmacy work, with Counter Club

Pestle Lane Pharmacy is a fictional independent pharmacy in a shopping strip. A typical front-of-shop regular comes in twice a month and spends about $35 on things that are not prescriptions: about $840 a year. The owner sets the card at 8 stamps, one per visit with a front-of-shop purchase over $20, and writes the reward as "$15 off any front-of-shop purchase". The sign under the QR reads: "Front of shop only. Prescriptions are not stamped." A twice-monthly regular fills the card in four months.

The QR is at the front counter, not the dispensary counter, so the card is never part of a script conversation. In three months 300 customers join and the pharmacy moves to Regulars. In late November the owner emails the 160 members who confirmed an address: "Christmas gift packs are in, from hand creams to shaving kits. Club members get them gift wrapped free until Christmas Eve." That used 160 of the month's 500 campaign messages, and the gift packs sell through a week earlier than the year before.

Questions from pharmacies

Can prescriptions earn stamps?

Keep them out. Rewarding dispensed medicines raises questions under the rules for pharmacies and medicines, and those rules are yours to check with your professional body. A card for front-of-shop purchases avoids the question and is easy to explain at the counter.

What should a pharmacy text or email about?

Stock and hours: a new range in, gift packs before Christmas, holiday trading times. Leave out health claims and anything to do with prescription medicines. If you would not print it on a shelf card, do not send it to the club.

Does Counter Club see anything about a customer's health?

No. It holds what the member typed when they joined, a mobile and optionally a first name and an email, plus their stamps and reward codes. It never sees prescriptions, purchases or health information, and it is not connected to your dispensing software.

Put the QR by the till this week

Setting the card takes two minutes. The first fifty members are free, paid for by a marketing consent instead of a card, and the card runs in full from day one.
